Jenny's first post Teotihuacán I: 'Where the Gods are Made' introduced the 'What' of Teotihuacán—the city's grid pattern and the construction of the Pyramid of the Moon and the Sun. But that post doesn't really explore the 'Why' of the place.... phase in the third century, Teotihuacán's population numbered about 30000. At its height in 500 CE, the city's population reached at least 100000—and some experts estimate the population to have reached as high as 200000.

Site map of Teotihuacán's major landmarks: Avenue of the Dead is 4 km (1.2 mile) road on north-south axis; Pyramid of the Moon is dark blue rectangle at top; Pyramid of the Sun is light blue square at right; Ciudadela is yellow square at bottom; San Juan... Based on these findings, the current hypothesis is that Teotihuacán was a cosmopolitan urban center which, at its height, was also inhabited by ethnically-diverse groups from various regions of Mesoamerica.
