Europe Tour: Schwangau vs Garmisch as a base for about 5 days?

I know that I want to see the Bavarian Alps and some of Ludwig%26#39;s castles. Also, would like to see Salzburg and Vienna,... Drive south to Garmisch (a beautiful small resort town) and take the back roads to Fussen (Neuschwanstein Castle). On that road is King Ludwig%26#39;s... two castles there.
