When astronaut William Pogue claimed to have seen the wall he later realized that the structure he saw was not the wall but was in fact the Grand Canal of China near Beijing. The European Space Agency (ESA) also issued a press release along with a picture that the wall was indeed visible to the naked eye from a low earth orbit between 160km and 320km - which is much closer to us than the moon is. A week later though they had to release a new statement...
